Driving the Low-Carbon Transition: NCKUH Completes ISO 14064-1:2018 Greenhouse Gas Inventory and Receives SGS Verification
Advancing Sustainable Development Goals by Establishing a Greenhouse Gas Inventory System as a Key Foundation for Energy Conservation, Carbon Reduction, and Sustainable Governance
In response to the global trend toward net-zero emissions and the government’s 2050 net-zero transition policy, National Cheng Kung University Hospital (NCKUH) continues to advance sustainable healthcare and environmental management. The hospital has completed an organization-level greenhouse gas (GHG) inventory across the hospital in accordance with ISO 14064-1:2018 and obtained a third-party verification statement from SGS. The completion of the inventory and verification demonstrates that NCKUH has established a greenhouse gas inventory system aligned with international standards, laying a foundation for future carbon reduction management, improved energy efficiency, and sustainable governance.
As healthcare institutions operate around the clock, medical equipment, air-conditioning systems, and other infrastructure must remain in continuous operation, resulting in relatively high energy consumption. To gain a comprehensive understanding of greenhouse gas emissions generated through its operations, NCKUH launched a hospital-wide GHG inventory in 2025. In accordance with ISO 14064-1:2018, the inventory covers Scope 1 (direct greenhouse gas emissions) and Scope 2 (indirect greenhouse gas emissions from imported energy). Through standardized inventory procedures and third-party verification, the hospital has established a comprehensive and consistent greenhouse gas emissions inventory to serve as an important basis for future carbon reduction measures.
NCKUH Superintendent Keng-Fu Hsu stated: “Safeguarding public health is the core mission of healthcare institutions, and a healthy environment is also an essential foundation for the well-being of all. In the face of challenges posed by climate change, healthcare institutions should not only provide high-quality medical services but also actively pursue energy conservation, carbon reduction, and environmental sustainability. Completing the ISO 14064-1 greenhouse gas inventory and obtaining third-party verification from SGS represents not only an important achievement in the hospital’s sustainability management efforts, but also establishes a foundation for the continuous improvement of environmental management. Moving forward, based on the inventory results, we will continue to advance energy management, equipment replacement, and energy-saving measures, progressively reduce carbon emissions, and move toward our goal of becoming a green smart hospital.”
NCKUH stated that completing the ISO 14064-1 greenhouse gas inventory and third-party verification marks an important starting point for advancing sustainable governance. Moving forward, the hospital will continue to deepen its ESG (environmental, social, and corporate governance) initiatives, progressively establish medium- and long-term carbon reduction strategies, strengthen energy management, and improve resource-use efficiency. By integrating the development of smart healthcare and green hospitals, NCKUH will take concrete action to advance healthcare services and environmental sustainability in parallel.
