National Cheng Kung University Hospital Receives Platinum Award for Sustainability Reporting at the Taiwan Health Sustainability Awards

Leading Low-Carbon Smart Healthcare Toward a Net-Zero Future

Platinum Recognition Marks a New Milestone in Healthcare Sustainability

National Cheng Kung University Hospital’s (NCKUH) Sustainability Report presents a comprehensive annual sustainability blueprint through data-driven indicators, a clear structure, and visualized charts. Following verification by an independent third-party professional organization and evaluation by the judging panel of the Taiwan Institute for Sustainable Energy (TAISE), NCKUH stood out among numerous healthcare institutions and received the “Sustainability Report – Platinum” honor at the 2nd Taiwan Health Sustainability Awards in 2025.

This prestigious recognition not only highlights NCKUH’s outstanding achievements in clinical care, smart healthcare, and transparent governance, but also demonstrates the hospital’s concrete implementation of the core principles of ESG—environmental, social, and governance. It further establishes NCKUH as a benchmark in healthcare sustainability and showcases the hospital’s resilience and forward-looking vision as a leader in sustainable healthcare.

Advancing Sustainability Across All Dimensions: From Low-Carbon Healthcare to a Model of Governance

On the environmental front, NCKUH is committed to advancing its sustainability vision of low-carbon operations and smart healthcare. From energy management to medical waste reduction, the hospital has actively introduced digital systems and energy-saving measures. Key initiatives include the digitalization of official documents, smart meter monitoring systems, waste reuse, the promotion of low-carbon transportation, and green dietary initiatives. Together, these efforts are gradually creating a low-carbon, circular environment and establishing key milestones toward a net-zero transformation in healthcare.

On the social front, NCKUH upholds the core principle of “holistic care and sustainability in parallel,” closely integrating human-centered care with shared community prosperity. The hospital continues to promote healthcare services in rural areas and telemedicine, while strengthening its culture of patient safety, supporting employees’ physical and mental well-being, and encouraging participation in community welfare initiatives. In doing so, NCKUH integrates the concept of “healthcare as sustainability” into hospital operations and community needs, transforming it into a tangible part of everyday practice.

On the governance front, NCKUH implements mechanisms for risk management, information transparency, and accountable governance, while establishing diverse recruitment and promotion systems and strengthening its governance framework and cross-departmental collaboration processes. Guided by the public responsibility and professional ethics of a healthcare institution, NCKUH demonstrates a model of credible, transparent, and continuously improving governance, fostering the mutual advancement of organizational sustainability and social trust.

Turning Recognition into a New Beginning for Low-Carbon Smart Healthcare

Superintendent Ching-Wei Lee stated that the Platinum Award represents not only an honor, but also responsibility and commitment. “We fully recognize that healthcare and the environment are closely interconnected. Only through continuous change, the courage to innovate, net-zero transformation, and smart innovation can we safeguard the health of future generations and the future of our planet.” NCKUH continues to advance its action blueprint for net-zero healthcare, expand green procurement and circular economy applications, and strengthen resource integration across its hospital campuses, moving toward a low-carbon, smart, resilient, and sustainable healthcare system.

Through sustainability education and promotion, creative project competitions, and interdisciplinary collaboration, NCKUH will continue to inspire its staff to co-create value through creativity and professional expertise, while further embedding ESG principles into practice. The hospital aspires to become a beacon leading Taiwan’s healthcare sector toward sustainability, enabling healthcare, society, and the environment to prosper, coexist, and thrive together.
