National Cheng Kung University Hospita, NangKuang Pharmaceutical and PackAge+ Join Forces to Promote Sustainable Circular Packaging, Leading the Pharmaceutical Industry Toward a New Era of Green Logistics.

In celebration of Earth Day and in pursuit of sustainable responsibility within the pharmaceutical industry, National Cheng Kung University Hospital (NCKUH), Nang Kuang Pharmaceutical, and PackAge+ jointly held a press conference today to announce their partnership on a Sustainable Circular Packaging Initiative, marking a new milestone in green logistics for the medical sector.

At the event, Dr. Hsiu-Chi Cheng, Vice Superintendent of CKU Hospital; Mr. Ted Yeh, Founder of PackAge+; and Mr. Ben-Sung Chen, Vice President of Digital Operations & Sustainability at Nang Kuang Pharmaceutical, signed a memorandum of understanding to promote circular packaging in medical logistics. Staff from all three organizations attended to witness the shared commitment to introducing reusable packaging solutions into the healthcare supply chain. The event showcased the design of circular logistics boxes and illustrated the “journey of a single medication box,” highlighting how the initiative reduces the consumption of single-use materials in pharmaceutical delivery. The project also collaborates with sheltered workshops for cleaning and maintenance, aligning with ESG goals of environmental sustainability, social responsibility, and supply chain governance.

Revolutionizing Medical Logistics: From Single-Use to Reusable Medication Boxes

According to global estimates, the healthcare sector accounts for approximately 4.4% of total carbon emissions, making green healthcare a priority for environmental policy. Ted Yeh of PackAge+ remarked that this collaboration represents an innovative, cross-industry model involving hospitals, pharmaceutical manufacturers, and sustainable logistics providers. It paves the way for broader adoption of circular practices in healthcare. The Pharmacy Department of NCKUH played a key role in piloting the circular box system, customizing operations for various hospital use cases to ensure a smooth and practical implementation.

PackAge+ has previously helped leading semiconductor manufacturers implement green supply chain solutions through customized reusable box designs. The company now aims to replicate this success in healthcare, creating a new benchmark for sustainability in the medical industry.

Nang Kuang Leads Green Logistics in Pharmaceuticals

With a strong commitment to reducing emissions throughout the full production and delivery chain, Nang Kuang Pharmaceutical continues to lead in sustainable pharma practices. The introduction of circular logistics boxes completes the company’s green logistics infrastructure, becoming the “missing piece” in its ESG journey.

Vice President Ben-Sung Chen stated, “Green transformation in the pharmaceutical industry must begin at the source of the supply chain.” As early as 1997, Nang Kuang pioneered eco-friendly Non-PVC infusion bags, launching Taiwan’s first large-volume IV solution free of plastic toxins. Today, the company integrates sustainable packaging, smart manufacturing, and green logistics as part of its comprehensive ESG strategy, leading the pharmaceutical industry toward low-carbon, circular operations.

Hospital-Industry Partnership Drives Social and Environmental Impact

Dr. Hsiu-Chi Cheng of NCKUH noted that sustainability is no longer a peripheral concept but a core extension of healthcare and a vital social responsibility. Through this collaboration, NCKUH incorporates PackAge+’s reusable logistics system for the delivery of Nang Kuang’s pharmaceutical products. The circular boxes are made from recycled materials, are fully reusable, and are integrated with a carbon tracking platform. In addition, the cleaning and sorting of the boxes are managed by sheltered workshops in southern Taiwan, supporting local employment, community connection, and social inclusion.

Together, the three partners have established the first-ever “Circular Box Alliance” in the pharmaceutical sector, setting a model for ESG implementation in the healthcare industry. By introducing reusable packaging, carbon tracking, and local social collaboration into the logistics system, the initiative embodies the principles of environmental protection, social care, and medical excellence. Moving forward, the partners will continue to deepen their cooperation and promote a sustainable, innovative future for healthcare.
