National Cheng Kung University Hospital and the Taiwan Institute for Sustainable Energy Sign the 'Hospital Sustainability Initiative,' Paving the Way for a Net-Zero Future.

In response to the global wave of net-zero carbon emissions and green ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) sustainability, National Cheng Kung University Hospital (NCKUH) is taking proactive steps to align with Taiwan’s 2050 Net-Zero Emissions Policy and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Today (4th), NCKUH officially signed the Hospital Sustainability Initiative with the Taiwan Institute for Sustainable Energy (TAISE). This collaboration spans across hospital governance, smart healthcare transformation, building a positive workplace culture, promoting environmental sustainability, and deepening social responsibility—demonstrating CKU Hospital’s strong commitment to enhancing institutional resilience and advancing toward global net-zero targets.

Dr. Ching-Wei Lee, President of NCKUH, emphasized that in the face of climate change, the hospital is dedicated to fostering green healthcare and building a sustainable medical environment. Drawing on the European Union’s concept of “twin transition”, NCKUH integrates ESG strategies with digital transformation to improve healthcare efficiency and service quality, while leveraging digital innovation to reduce carbon emissions. Throughout its net-zero transition, the hospital continues to uphold a “patient-centered” philosophy. These efforts have garnered international recognition, with Newsweek naming NCKUH one of the World’s Best Smart Hospitals in 2025, making it one of only eight hospitals in Taiwan to receive this distinction. This achievement reflects the hospital’s success in pursuing smart innovation and sustainability in tandem, creating an inclusive, collaborative, and resilient healthcare environment.

Ambassador Eugene Chien, Chairman of TAISE, noted that the foundation has been actively promoting sustainable transformation across Taiwan. To date, TAISE has signed the Sustainability Initiative with 99 hospitals nationwide, including 24 medical centers, representing 86% of all such institutions in Taiwan. Ambassador Chien commended NCKUH not only for its dedication to sustainability but also for its outstanding achievements in smart healthcare on the international stage. He expressed his honor in partnering with NCKUH to pursue shared goals in sustainability and net-zero transformation.

Protecting the planet and achieving net-zero emissions is a global imperative and an issue that can no longer be overlooked. Looking forward, NCKUH will continue to integrate medical professionalism with its core mission of health care, advancing hospital sustainability and collaborating with all sectors to co-create a better, more sustainable society.
